Workers who work for 27 hours or less per week in the wholesale and retail industry will get a 9,7% as from February 1, said the Department of Labour on Monday.
”These are just annual wage increases and will apply to all workers whether they are based in shops in urbanised, peri-urban or rural areas,” said department spokesperson Zolisa Singaba.
”This means that a cashier who works in a shop in an urban area who currently earns an absolute minimum of R10,29c an hour will now earn R11,29,” said Singaba.
Workers working more than 27 hours in urban and peri-urban areas will receive a 6% increase while those working in the rural areas will get an 8,9% increase.
”This means that a cashier who earns R9,91 in an urban area will now earn R10,50. The same cashier in a peri-urban area will now earn R8,46 per hour,” said Singaba.
A cashier working in the rural areas will be paid R8,04, which is 95% of the rate paid to workers working in peri-urban areas. — Sapa
