THE Amnesty Committee of the Truth Commission on Tuesday granted amnesty to a former member of the African National Congress convicted of killing 21 people and attempting to murder another 16. Michael Phama has been serving a sentence of a total 195 years in prison for his crimes. The amnesty committee said it believes Phama has made a full disclosure of his crimes and had operated with a political objective, thereby qualifying for pardon. The committee heard that Phama and fellow members of so-called self defence units set up by the ANC to protect party members opened fire on a group of IFP supporters on their way to a political rally in September 1991. Phama was also involved in a shooting in Thokoza in February 1992 in which five people died, as well as the shooting and wounding of two traffic police officers outside Johannesburg in March that year.
