ONE DEAD AFTER LAGOS MOSQUE COLLAPSES

ONE person died and a dozen others were rescued when a mosque collapsed on Wednesday in a slum in Lagos, but scores of other worshippers were believed to still be under the rubble, a rescue official said. One dead body was pulled from the debris, and another person rescued was seriously injured, the leader of the rescue team said. Eleven others sustained minor wounds after the three-story mosque building collapsed during a downpour. The number of people still buried in the debris was not known, but screams of trapped victims were heard. Residents speculated that up to 50 people may have been at the Danmole Central Mosque, including some children who attend Koranic lessons there. – AFP
