Zuma camp takes top posts in Western Cape ANC

Supporters of Jacob Zuma have taken the top five positions in the leadership of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape.

The results were announced at the troubled ANC provincial conference in Cape Town on Thursday.

A party spokesperson said none of the posts were contested.

Mcebisi Skwatsha, former provincial secretary who was in the news earlier this year when he was stabbed at an ANC meeting in the Boland, takes over as chairperson from James Ngculu.

Deputy chairperson is Lynne Brown, who was recently appointed Western Cape Premier when Thabo Mbeki sympathiser Ebrahim Rasool was axed.

The new provincial secretary is Sipho Kroma, currently a member of the provincial legislature.

He is expected to relinquish the legislature post following his election, in line with ANC policy that provincial secretaries should concentrate on that job.

Kroma has been the target of criticism from the opposition Democratic Alliance in the province, following reports that the Southern Cape’s Bitou municipality paid R5 346 for his hotel accommodation when he visited Cape Town eight times on ANC business between 2004 and 2006.

Kroma was at the time neither employed by the council nor a councillor.

ANC chief whip in the legislature Max Ozinsky was re-elected deputy provincial secretary.

Treasurer is Cape Town businessman Songezo Mjongile.

The conference, which began on Wednesday, continued on Thursday morning with discussion on an organisational report.

ANC president Jacob Zuma is expected to address it some time during the day.

On Wednesday, a large group of dissidents held a protest meeting in Langa township, claiming irregularities in the run-up to the conference. — Sapa
