Roger Kebble tax case postponed in court

The tax-evasion case against embattled mining magnate Roger Kebble was postponed at the Johannesburg Regional Court on Thursday.

Kebble faces charges related to the non-submission of tax returns and under-declaration of income.

The case was heard in the chambers of a magistrate Carstens because of the continuing public-service strike. Carstens postponed the case to July 16.

Kebble’s advocate, Max Hodes, SC, said he would oppose any further postponement as Kebble had already appeared seven times, the first appearance being on March 3 last year.

Kebble appeared alongside Hodes wearing a black suit, pink shirt and pink tie.

The halls of the regional court were empty, with no cases being heard owing to the strike.

The case relates to a business called Skilled Labour Brokers, a close corporation of which Kebble was the sole member. The business was registered for tax purposes in 1996 and value-added tax returns were submitted for the years 1999, 2000 and 2001.

However, in tax returns for those years Kebble allegedly failed to declare that the business had received any income. — Sapa
