THANKS to modern technology, we will be privileged to witness on our screens the story of our miraculous transition to democracy. But how sad that the prized roles of President Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk should be played by actors Sidney Poitier and Michael Caine.
These roles belong to Tony Award winner John Kani and to Ian Robertson.
Both these actors are highly accomplished and will do great justice to the roles. Imitating the people they would be portraying should be the least of their problems.
As for the history, they have lived it on stage and in real life. Unlike Poitier and Caine, they do not need any lessons on our history.
We should be brave like the Australians and start telling our own stories. The government should give such projects its blessing and assist with funding. At least it would be worth more than the ill-fated Sarafina II. – EV Rapiti, Cape Town
