The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has condemned the Johannesburg Civic Theatre for using wild animals on stage in its production of Verdi’s Aida. NCSPCA spokesperson Christine Kuch said on Tuesday it was ”unethical and unacceptable” that two lions, a tiger and horses were being taken on stage.

The unnecessary confinement and transportation of elephants for entertainment purposes has left the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) ”seriously perturbed”. It was on Tuesday responding to the Norms and Standards for the Management of Elephants in South Africa, announced a day before.

The lives of many animals may be threatened by power failures unless adequate back-up facilities are provided, the the National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) said on Tuesday. ”People who hold animals in captivity … [must] implement a contingency plan,” said the NSPCA.
The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) hopes that the government’s proposed elephant-management regulations will lead to elephant-back safaris being abolished. The draft rules propose stopping the capture from the wild of anything other than genuine orphan elephant calves.

The furore surrounding the slaughtering of a bull by former African National Congress chief whip Tony Yengeni was a political issue that had nothing to do with animal cruelty, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) said on Tuesday.
