Security steps have been taken at the Kruger National Park in the wake of attacks at four entrance gates and camps of the park between August and October, Environmental Affairs and Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk has said. Armed Kruger National Park security and ranger personnel have been deployed at all entrance gates.
More animals were killed by poachers in the Kruger National Park (KNP) last year than the year before, but the park says the numbers have ”decreased significantly” in recent months. ”Up to 20 white rhino were poached last year; the figure is now back down to seven or eight,” KNP media officer Raymond Travers said.
The Limpopo provincial government has placed a moratorium on hunting in the private nature reserves that border the Kruger National Park (KNP). The moratorium concerns private reserves that are not separated from the KNP by a fence. However, the chairperson of the Timbavati Association has called the moratorium ”totally illegal”.
