THE payments ANC officials are receiving is a cause for concern. An ANC official from the Northern Cape is receiving R10 000 salary a month. He has also received a car and a housing subsidy of up to R240 000! And he is not even an MP!
The maintenance of these exorbitant salaries and perks is going to cost the taxpayer a fortune. What with Deputy President FW de Klerk being allocated R8 496 000 to maintain his staff of 61, including household staff, and Constitutional Court judges set to receive up to R1-million gratuity if they retire at 40, one wonders whether the Government of National Unity has the interests of disadvantaged South Africans at heart!
Balance these exorbitant costs against the recent Budget proposals. Governments departments including health, education and welfare have been cut by four percent which means a decline in services and standards.
One wouldn’t mind paying the transition levy if we didn’t have to pay the exorbitant and extravagant government costs. Yet it seems that we have exchanged one fat cat government for another. _ Denzil Coulson, DP youth vice-chair, Western Cape
