Sibusiso Nxumalo
POLICE have launched an internal investigation into the conduct of two constables who allegedly haras-sed Alexandra Civic Association president Mzwanele Mayekiso.
Witwatersrand police spokesman Warrant Officer Azwinndini Nengovhela said an investigation was under way.
Mayekiso said that on Monday night he and his girlfriend were taking his driver to his home in Alexandra. The trio were aware of an unmarked car trailing them through the township.
“When we parked outside my driver’s yard, two white policemen jumped out with guns pointed at us and said they wanted to search us,” Mayekiso said.
“When I suggested they were harassing us becau-se we were in the company of a white person they said they would show me what harassment was.”
Mayekiso said the policemen then searched him and his driver. He asked the two policemen, who were not wearing uniforms, for identification. “They told me I was full of shit and that they would take me to a police station and book me for being unco-operative,” he said.
At the Alexandra police station policemen on duty recognised the community leader. “Only the arrival of a senior officer from the Sandton police station stopped them from taking me there where they said they would beat me up,” Mayekiso said.
He said he had laid a complaint because “if they can harass a community leader like me, what chance do ordinary people have with them?”
