Sailing On a Lily Pad

CHILDREN’S THEATRE: Di Mannie

‘MOM, must we close our eyes?” asked a little boy in the audience as the show began and the theatre became a time machine with loud noises and flashing lights. When it was all over, it was the same voice that sighed: “Mom, that was so nice.”

Director Jill Gerard believes childrens’ theatre should have top-class casts and exciting scenery. Both can be seen in the People’s Theatre production, Once Upon a Time, a collection of fairy tales from Hans Christian Andersen.

The talented cast of four make up the story-telling Gribbets. Gina Shmukler, Neville Thomas, Nicholas Ashby and Gary Wright change from one believable character to another, using various hats, masks and easy-to-change costumes. They complement each other in such a way that their enjoyment can be felt. The cast involves the audience, calling for responses which are willingly given, and taking children on to the stage to play guards, dogs and ladies-in- waiting. It was delightful to see a five-year-old boy rush to tie on a little skirt so that he could play Thumbelina and sail across the stage on his “lily-pad”.

The skilfully-designed scenery comprises a selection of giant books. The music and singing are catchy and used to full effect. Many of the younger members of the audience sang along with the Ugly Duckling. Once Upon a Time is 90 minutes of light- hearted entertainment.
