Zuma’s decision angers interns

FRIDAY, 4.00PM:

HEALTH Minister Dr Nkosazana Zuma may be taken to court over the Health Department’s proposal that medical students and interns have their training extended by two years of vocational training. Students and interns appointed attorneys to study the legal implications of Zuma’s scheme, which they say was announced unilaterally, with no chance of opposition.

The attorneys have given Zuma a deadline of May 31, by which time she has to account for the decision and detail the plans for implementation. The decision was announced in a April 1997 medical council report, adding that only those students with two years vocational training will qualify to be registered or employed from January 1998.
