POLICE CHIEF George Fivaz has been quick to welcome the weekend appointment of SA Breweries boss Meyer Kahn as chief executive of the SA Police. Fivaz said he hoped Kahn would fight for better status, salaries and working conditions for police, and leave him to get on with crime fighting.
Deputy President Thabo Mbeki announced on Saturday that Kahn, who has turned SAB into one of the world’s largest brewing companies, will help manage police support functions for two years, following an initiative by Business Against Crime.
Kahn says his mission is a four-pronged strategy: to reorganise personnel and assets in the police force, improve on resources and crack down on demotivation. The appointment of a senior business executive to this position is likely to renew flagging business support for the government’s anti-crime strategies.
