A PILOT project for a multimillion-rand bamboo production project has been launched at Malamulele in Northern Province.
The joint venture between the Northern Province Investment Initiative and a Belgian-based company with interests in Europe and the Far East aims to establish modern bamboo farming in the province with the eventual aim the creation of a R100-million industry.
It is expected that the scheme will generate 5 000 jobs, with the pilot scheme also serving as a training centre. A project representative said: “Apart from combating soil erosion and providing other environmental benefits, the bamboo will beused in food production and as a substitute for wood.”
