TCB won’t make affirmative action appointment

FRIDAY, 12.30PM:

The candidates for the position of Transvaal Cricket Board chief executive officer have not been made public, but an annoucement was made by the board that this will not be an affirmative action appointment.

TCB president Gerald Ritchie said on Thursday: “If the person we select happens to be from one of the previously disadvantaged groups, it will be simply because that person is the best possible choice for the job.”

He said the board will meet the applicants for the position on Saturday and early next week, before the selection is made.

SA PAIR STICK TOGETHER GOLFERS Roger Wessels and Retief Goosen of South Africa both scored 70 for 2-under-par in the second round of the Hamburg Open Golf tournament in Germany on Thursday. They are two shots behind first round leader Paul Broadhurst.

GIBB OK FEARS that British Lions centre Scott Gibbs broke his ankle in the match against Border have been allayed. Gibbs merely damaged the ligaments in his ankle, and will be back in training within a week.

HENNING FOR SUPER 12 FINAL NORTHERN TRANSVAAL’S Tappe Henning will be the referee in the Super 12 rugby final in Auckland on Saturday. The final is between Australian Capital Territories and Auckland.

KALLIS THE CENTURION SA cricketer Jacques Kallis batted 121 for English club Middlesex in their English county championship match against Northampton at Lords cricket ground in London on Thursday. Middlesex closed the day with 400 for two.

SEPENG TO EUROPE OLYMPIC 800m silver medalist Hezekial Sepeng is to compete in the European Grand Prix track and field circuit next week.
