SEXUAL VIOLENCE GUIDELINES NEW guidelines are being drawn up for South African state officials who handle cases of sexual violence against women and children. The Justice department announced the guidelines on Friday, and said they are to protect the fundamental rights of all women and childen to safety, security and protection. Officials who contravene the guidelines may face disciplinary action.

SA TO WRITE SWAZI CONSTITUTION? SOUTH Africa’s High Commissioner to Swaziland Walter Louw announced on Thursday SA’s willingness to help Swaziland draft a new constitution. Louw told Swazi officials gathered at celebrations in Mbabane marking South Africa’s new constitution that Swaziland can count on South Africa’s help in drafting its own.

FEWER CRIME STATS The department of safety and security announced on Friday that crime statistics will only be released to the media on a quarterly basis in future, and no longer upon inquiry. A ministry representative, Maxwell Mulaudzi, said the new release policy is to curb distortions of crime reporting in the media.
