MP’s SISTER MURDERED The mutilated body of Letitia Lindt, sister of Pan Africanist Congress MP Patricia de Lille, was discovered near Kuilsriver late on Monday. De Lille said on Tuesday: “Her mutilated body was found on a farm near Wallacedene squatter camp … she is the latest victim of barbaric acts of criminals who have no value for human life.”
PREMIER ‘AMUSED’ NORTHERN Province Premier Ngoako Ramatlhodi said on Tuesday he found it “amusing” that The Star newspaper reported he is planning to quit his post soon. His office released an official response to the newspaper’s report, saying Ramatlhodi has at no stage “felt the urge or the pressure to quit”.
CAR PARTS TO BE MARKED A NEW crime strategy will require that all car parts be marked in future, making it easier to identify the products of “chop shops” run by car theft rackets, safety and security minister Sydney Mufamadi has announced. The number of border posts will be cut from 95 to 34 to exercise greater control over cross-border stolen car traffic. Central Statistical Services has been asked to examine the police crime statistics to evaluate their accuracy.
PAY DEAL CLOSE MOST public service unions have agreed to accept the government’s average 7,5% increases, including 11% increases for unskilled workers. The only unions still holding out are those of the police and teachers.
SA YOUTH GETS 35 YEARS A SOUTH African teenager was on Monday sentenced in a Jackson, Mississippi, court to the maximum penalty of 35 years for his part in the murder of a state welfare worker. Azikiwe Kambule, 18, last week pleaded guilty to charges of armed carjacking and accessory after the fact to murder. He received 30 years for the carjacking charge and a consecutive five years for the accessory charge. The prosecution had originally sought the death sentence.
