Oil fund ‘lost’ R173-million

THURSDAY, 11.00AM

MINERAL and Energy Affairs Minister Penuell Maduna told Parliament yesterday that the Strategic Fuel Fund, the state-owned body that negotiated apartheid oil purchases, could not account for R173-million spent in oil deals by the National Party government.

Maduna said wrongdoers will be uncovered in an investigation by private auditors Ntsaluba Nkoni Sizwe and they will be exposed. He added that the investiagtion’s findings will “embarrass some people. They will have to say what was happening to our money. They still have to say how we lost stock of R173-million.”

The auditor-general’s office previously gave the fund a clean bill of health. Maduna, in answer to questions from parliamentarians, said he felt compelled to go outside the ranks of the state for independent investigators “to give me the answers I was looking for”.

Maduna said he will soon hand the full report to Parliament and President Nelson Mandela.
