Mofokeng accused of bribery

WEDNESDAY, 8.00AM

GAUTENG’S MEC for housing, Dan Mofokeng, tried to bribe a policeman who found an AK-47 rifle in a cupboard in his house, a magistrate heard on Tuesday. Mofokeng pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of an unlawful AK-47 rifle and ammunition, and for failing to safeguard his licenced pistol, which was left lying on a bedside table.

Constable Daniel Van Rensburg said he had entered the Mofokeng house in Germiston with a colleague because they suspected it was being burgled. The two entered the house through an open window, to find it undisturbed. The found a pistol lying on a bedside table, and spotted the barrel of an AK-47 sticking out of the top of a cupboard.

Mofokeng was called back to the house, where he first denied all knowledge of the AK-47, and then offered to use his position to “take care” of the policemen if they quietly dropped the matter.

Asked why he had not mentioned the “bribe” allegation until his fourth statement on the incident, Van Rensburg said he had “forgotten” about it. The case continues today.
