Pagad in Jo’burg fracas

THURSDAY, 2.30PM

A GROUP of five members of the Cape Flats-based vigilante group People Against Gangsterism and Drugs handing out anti-drug pamphlets in Johannesburg’s upmarket Rosebank were set upon by a large group of nightclub bouncers and beaten up on Wednesday night.

Pagad Gauteng leader Ayob Mungalee and four scarf-wrapped colleagues had targeted Rosebank’s night-owls for their anti-drug message. “It was meant to be very peaceful,” said Mungalee. “We had gone to Catch 22 to deliver pamphlets and were going across to Krypton in Tyrwhitt Avenue when about 100 bouncers pushed us out of the Constantia Centre and started to beat us up.”

Mungalee and one of his colleagues suffered minor injuries in the assault.

A Pagad splinter group has threatened to return to the area with firearms to avenge the attack.
