Electoral commission appointed

THURSDAY, 3.30PM

DEPUTY President Thabo Mbeki on Thursday announced the names of the five-member Independent Electoral Commission to oversee the 1999 general election.

The commissioners, who will serve on a part-time basis, are: Brigilia Bam, Judge Johann Kriegler, NF Mpulwana, Fanie van der Merwe and Professor Herbert Vilikazi. Presidential spokesman Parks Mankahlana said the chair and deputy chair will be announced in a fortnight after consultation with the Cabinet.

It is expected that Kriegler, who headed the IEC for the 1994 elections, will be chair, and Bam will be his deputy.

The commission, which was set up in terms of the new Constitution and recently approved by Parliament, will be responsible for running the 1999 elections.
