PHOENIX SUSPECT ARRESTED

POLICE have arrested a suspect beleived to be the Phoenix Starangler, who has raped and murdered at least 19 women in Phoenix near Durban. The suspect was arrested during a raid on a shack in the Besters shantytown near Phoenix. The suspect, a Zulu-speaking man between the ages of 30 and 40 closely fits the psychological profile drawn up by serial killing experts, said police. It is believed the suspect has previous rape convictions.

TREVOR TUTU IN BAIL APPEAL

TREVOR TUTU, the son of Archbishop Desmond Tutu arrested last week to serve a three-and-a-half-year prison term following his 1991 conviction for making a bomb hoax, has lodged an appeal against his refusal of bail after his arrest. Tutu was to have begun serving his sentence in 1993 after losing his appeal against conviction, but was not arrested after losing the appeal.

SADTU ACCEPTS GOVT OFFER

THE SA Democratic Teachers’ Union on Friday welcomed the 9% salary increase offered to its members by the government, noting that it will benefit almost 80% of teachers. Sadtu deputy president Edwin Pillay said the government’s new offer, up from the initial 7,5% offered, represents a victory for Sadtu. Government and the Education Labour Relations Council on Wednesday agreed that 79% of teachers will receive an increase of 9%, 11% will receive 8,5%, and the remaining 10% will receive an 8% increase. All the increments will be back-dated to July 1.
