Bungu conquers Jupiter

MONDAY, 1.30PM:

INTERNATIONAL Boxing Federation junior featherweight champion Vuyani “The Beast” Bungu succesfully defended his title for the ninth time against Mexican Enrique Jupiter at Carousel on Saturday night. Bungu won the fight on points.

Bungu is now looking at a unification fight against World Boxing Organisation champion Junior Jones. Before that fight — which might take place in January or February — he is likely to defend against former world bantamweight great Orlando Canizales in November. “I’m the champion and I will not duck anybody,” said Bungu. “I’ll fight whoever my promoter comes up with. That’s why they call me the best.”

The cut above Bungu’s eye, which gushed blood from round seven onwards, troubled him until the 11th round. Bungu took control of the fight in the 11th round and caught his opponent with good and solid punches. He landed the best blow of the fight later in the round and followed it with a few more. In the 12th round, “The Beast” was full of confidence and he made sure he retained his title by cornering Jupiter with hard blows.
