Natal rugby on road to court

THURSDAY, 12.30PM:

NATAL Rugby Union is taking the South African Rugby Football Union bosses to court in a row over the plan to regionalise next year’s Super-12 rugby competition. Natal claim that Sarfu’s decision has already cost them R3,5-million in revenue from sponsors.

According to the plan, Natal will be grouped together with Border and Eastern Province to form one regoinal team to take part in the competition, which brings together the best teams from South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Last year Natal reached the finals of the competition and this year they were eliminated in the semi-final.

The proposal was supported by a majority of 10 to 3 in a meeting of the chief executives of Sarfu’s 14 provinces. Natal claim that only a full meeting of Sarfu can agree to such a proposal.
