TUESDAY, 1.30PM:
OLYMPIC gold medallist Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia wants to reclaim his 5 000m world records when he runs in Berlin on Tuesday night. Gebrselassie lost his two world records to two Kenyans on Friday. Daniel Komen shattered the 5 000m mark with a time of 12min 39,74sec and Paul Tergat broke the 10 000m after clocking 26min 27,85sec.
Gebrselassie said he is going to win back his records. “The records have only been borrowed, I’ll get them back,” he said.
Meanwhile, Namibian Frankie Fredericks will be looking at beating world record holder Donovan Bailey and American Maurice Green to claim a share in the 20kg of gold at the Berlin Grand Prix on Tuesday. The gold will be shared among those who have won all four events in the Golden Four series. Distance runner Gebriela Szabo of Romania and Morrocan Hicham El Guerrouj also stand in line for a share of the gold, valued at $200 000.
“If I win, I will have beaten best sprinters in the world on four occasions and that to me, will mean as much as a gold medal,” said Fredericks.
