Penny makes heavy going in Sicily

THURSDAY, 12.30PM:

OLYMPIC double gold medallist Penny Heyns clocked 2min 32,13sec and finished fourth in the 200m breaststroke final at the World Student Games in Sicily, Italy on Wednesday. Masami Tanaka of Japan won the race in 2min 30,24sec.

Heyns qualified for the final after winning her heat in 2min 31,98sec earlier in the day.”Personally I dont think this meet was good for me,” she said. “I’ve been travelling a lot and I’m feeling run down.” Heyns will also compete in Friday’s 100m breaststroke.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Marius Corbett and Llewellyn Herbert qualified in their preliminary rounds and heats.

Corbett and compatriot Johannes van Eck qualified for the javelin finals on Thursday. Corbett threw 73,36m, his day’s best, to qualify.

Herbert won his heat in 50,30sec to qualify for the semifinals on Thursday. “It is only important to qualify. The time doesn’t matter. I’ll do better tomorrow,” he said.
