Bulls sink Pumas

MONDAY, 11.05AM:

NORTHERN TRANSVAAL beat bottom-of-the-table Mpumalanga Pumas 36-16 in a Bankfin Currie Cup match at Johann van Riebeeck Stadium on Saturday. Northerns led 21-6 at half time.

The teaming of Joost van der Westhuizen, Archer Dames and Casper Steyn, proved effective for the Northerns. Van der Westhuizen made some decisive breaks around the fringes of the scrum which resulted in Dames and Steyn stretching their opponents’ cover defence.

NORTHERN TRANSVAAL SCORERS: Tries by Joost van der Westhuizen, Archer Dames and Lourens Campher. Three penalties and a conversion by Roland de Marigny. Casper Steyn kicked a penalty and a conversion.

MPUMALANGA PUMAS SCORERS: Try by Dan van Zyl. Eben von Gericke kicked three penalties and a conversion.

*Free State beat South Western Districts 69-15 in a Bankfin Currie Cup match at Free State Stadium on Saturday. Free State scored 11 tries as they outplayed their oppponents. Springbok Johan Erasmus was voted man of the match and proved he has few peers on the side of the scrum.

SOUTH AFRICA’S preparation and participation in the World Cup Finals in June next year will cost R35 million, the SA Football Association said yesterday. The biggest expenses will be salaries and bonuses for players, and for coach Clive Barker, who is expected to demand about R100 000 per month at salary negotiations today.

CHIEFS SIGN ZIM STARKAIZER Chiefs managing director Kaizer Motaung confirmed that Chiefs have signed Zimbabwean international striker Liberty Musunda from Turkey and Nigerian defender Musa Oja from Cercle Burgge of Belgium last week.

HANSIE BEATS FANIEHANSIE Cronje’s invitation XI beat Fanie de Villiers XI 163-156 in a cricket match on Saturday – as part of Cronje’s benefit weekend. Darryl Cullinan scored 86 and took four wickets for 20 runs for Cronje XI. Cullinan was voted man of the match.
