THURSDAY, 11:30AM:
EDUCATION minister for Gauteng, Mary Metcalfe, admitted on Wednesday the leak of Monday’s matric accounting examination paper happened within her department. She gave no details of how the theft took place, but did reveal the breach did not happen in the maximum security building where the papers are stored – dubbed ‘Alcatraz’.
”The examination of the department’s security system and packages of exam papers in storage points showed that there was no breach of security,” Metcalfe said.
She said her department is in the process of setting up a commission of inquiry – headed by a criminal lawyer – to look into the matter. The commission will subpoena suspects and people who may have inside information to testify under oath.
Metcalfe said the department believes there may be a highly efficient syndicate in place, stealing and selling the papers.
