SA loses last test as controversial goal allowed

MONDAY, 12.00NOON:

THE South African men’s hockey team lost 4-3 to Argentina in the final Test in Buenos Aires on Saturday after a controversial goal with the score on 3-3. South African coach Giles Bonnett after the match called for an FIH panel of neutral umpires to referee in future.

This was after umpire Guillermo Poleri awarded the goal that won the match with a shot that was some 20cm above the board of line from a short corner. The decision even suprised the Argentinians. After that goal the South Africans repeatedly called on the umpire to check the height of the ball with his co-umpire Garth Proudfoot, but Poleri ignored them.

After the game the Argentinian players apologised to the South Africans.

South Africa led 2-0 at half-time through goals by Grant Fulton and minutes after half-time Mike Cullen increased the tally. The umpire awarded the home side five consecutive short corners that resulted in goals from Diego Chiodo and Fernando Ferrera. Ignacio Fernandez equalised before the controversial winning goal.
