Hockey women take second Test

THURSDAY, 12.30PM:

THE South African women’s hockey team turned the tables on their German counterparts by winning the second Test 3-1 at Hartleyvale on Wednesday night.

Leading 1-0 at the turn through a penalty goal by Britta Becker, the Germans, who seemed the dominant team, started to relax their defences.

The South Africans replied by scoring three goals: a penalty goal by Pietie Coetzee and goals by Kerry Bee and Karen Roberts.

The South Africans and Germans are level on one Test all after two matches.

LIONS MAKE R15m IN 1997

THE Gauteng Lions Rugby Union on Thursday announced it made a R15-million profit in 1997 — nearly R6,5-million (75%) more than the previous year. Combined financial results for the union, its Sports Trust and Ellis Park stadium, show income increased to R27,3-million (R21,3-million) while expenditure dipped to R12,338-million (R12,779-million). 1997 expenditure decreased, according to the union’s Louis Luyt jnr, because 1996 figures included costs not applicable last year, mainly one-off development-oriented capital expenditure and contractual obligations to Rugby World Cup players. This is the first year the union has combined its results with the Sports Trust and Ellis Park.

FERREIRA OUT AT INDIAN WELLS

AUSTRALIAN US Open champion Pat Rafter beat Wayne Ferreira of SA in the second round of the Indian Wells tennis tournament in the US on Tuesday. The third seeded Aussie got a little resistance from Ferreira, but ended up winning 7-5 5-7 6-4.

NTSHONGWANA DEBUTS FOR BULLS

JOSEPH NTSHONGWANA, former SA U/19 flanker, has been called up by the Blue Bulls to face the Gauteng Lions in a Vodacom Cup match at Ellis Park on Saturday night. Ntshongwana replaces hardman Gustav Japhta, who pulled out on Wednesday with an injured thigh.

EP TEAM UNCHANGED

EASTERN Province have made no changes to the team that will play Griqualand West in a Vodacom Cup match at Hoffe Park in Kimberley on Friday night.
