THURSDAY, 9.15AM:
THE National Sports Council lifted the ban on international rugby tours to South Africa amid scenes of jubilation in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening.
After lengthy meetings with the South African Rugby Football Union’s executive and the 14 provincial rugby unions, the NSC announced that proposed tours by England, Wales and Ireland will go ahead as planned.
The Tri-Nations series will also continue without any disruption.
NSC president Mluleki George said that Sarfu’s expulsion from the NSC has been cancelled, and that organisations such as the Congress of South African Trade Unions will be informed about the latest developments.
The NSC, Sarfu and the 14 provinces agreed to an interim executive committee being appointed to run rugby, and that Sarfu hold a special meeting to make the necessary changes to its constitution.
All parties agreed that a commission of inquiry into rugby affairs is a necessity.
