Truce short-lived in Guinea-Bissau

A RADIO station controlled by Guinea-Bissau rebels who signed a ceasefire with government forces last weekend, reported on Tuesday that government forces have violated the agreement.

The station reported that Senegalese pro-government forces attacked rebel positions near Bafata. The rebels also claimed that government forced blew up a bridge near Bafata.

The rebels and the government signed a ceasefire on Sunday, after mediation by six other Portuguese speaking countries. The diplomats are to meet again on Friday in the Cape Verde Islands to discuss the possibility of an international monitoring force being deployed in Guinea-Bissau.
