ABOUT 1000 residents have marched on the Richmond police station to demand the re-arrest of United democratic Movement leader and local strongman Sifiso Nkabinde.
The marchers also demanded the removal of certain local police from the KwaZulu-Natal midlands town where almost 40 people have died this month. In the latest attacks, nine members of a family gathered for a wedding were gunned down on Tuesday night, and an elderly couple attacked in their farmhouse.
Residents of Simozomeni, where Tuesday’s killings took place, and Indaleni, an ANC stronghold and scene of previous violence, took part in the march, which was organised by local ANC leaders.
Nkabinde was charged with 16 counts of murder and two of incitement to murder related to five incidents since 1993. He was acquitted on all charges on April 30 in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
