Nkabinde denies arrested man is bodyguard

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Durban | Monday 12.15PM.

UNITED Democratic Movement national secretary Sifiso Nkabinde has denied that a man arrested during violence in Richmond at the weekend is one of his bodyguards.

He conceded, however, that the man, who was arrested for being in possession of 85 rounds of ammunition normally used only by police and army, was a UDM member.

The man was arrested during a confrontation between African national Congress members attending the funeral of the nine Shezi family members who were gunned down while gathered for a wedding, and UDM members on a protest march. When the UDM march entered Indaleni, an ANC stronghold near Richmond, the two sides began throwing rocks at each other. Police separated them but not before somebody in the crowd began firing with an automatic weapon. Two people were injured.

The arrested man will appear in the local magistrate’s court on Tuesday.
