Radebe to skipper Leeds

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Johannesburg | Wednesday 9.30AM.

BAFANA Bafana skipper Lucas Radebe was on Tuesday named as the captain of the English Premier League club Leeds United for the 1998/99 season, taking over from Scottish international midfielder David Hopkin.

Leeds manager George Graham’s vote of confidence in the 29-year-old defender comes less than two weeks after his leadership of Bafana Bafana at the World Cup in France was criticised by national striker Phil Masinga.

Graham has, however, put some pressure on Radebe, saying: “Radebe will need to be much more demonstrative on the field this season. I will also be looking for a bit more from him in terms of not only his performance but in drawing more out of others.”

Radebe will lead Leeds for the first time in their away match against Middlesborough at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday.
