Morkel reshuffles Western Cape cabinet

WESTERN Cape premier Gerald Morkel on Thursday announced a complete reshuffle of his provincial cabinet which sees popular former Cape Town mayor Leon Markowitz taking over the finance portfolio.

A second newcomer, former chief executive of the Helderberg municipality Frieda Adams will assume the post of MEC in the office of the premier. Morkel will have three deputies — Peter Marais and national MPs Frik van Deventer and Maretha Badenhorst — who were elected ahead of McKenzie, the only other nominee for the posts.

Morkel allocated other portfolios as follows:

Health and welfare — Peter Marais. Environment, culture, sport and recreation — Kobus Meiring. Agriculture and property mangement — Lampie Fick. Housing — Cecil Herandien. Business development and tourism — Hennie Bester. Local government and gaming — Patrick McKenzie. Transport and works — Piet Meyer. Education — Nick Koornhof. Development planning — Michael Louis.
