SA can close in for the kill

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Johannesburg | Sunday 11.00pm.

SOUTH Africa are firmly in position to take the first Test against the West Indies in Johannesburg after dismissing the tourists for 170 runs in their second innings, a slender overall lead of 163 runs.

Only a sixth-wicket partnership of 68 between Carl Hooper and wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs gave some credibility to the Windies scorecard as the South African bowlers went on the rampage.

The Windies innnings was wrapped up in 81,3 overs with Shaun Pollock once again proving to be the tourists’ nemesis adding 4/49 to his first innings 5/54.

Pollock, 25, has now completed the coveted allrounders “double” of 100 wickets and 1000 runs at Test level.

Hooper and Jacobs were finally dismissed just before tea, and their departure marked the complete collapse of the Windies batting line-up. Hooper was trapped leg before by Jacques Kallis, while Jacobs was caught by David Terbrugge at mid-on off the bowling of Pat Symcox.

After Symcox dismissed paceman Nixon McLean for 11, Pollock claimed the wickets of Rawl Lewis (10) and Courtney Walsh (0) in three deliveries.
