MORTAR fire was heard Tuesday morning in Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown, as intervention troops continued an offensive against rebels who stormed the city two weeks ago. The offensive by the Nigerian-led Ecomog force began Monday, southeast of Freetown, along the main road linking the peninsula to the interior. Ecomog intends to prevent the rebels escaping along that road. Revolutionary United Front rebels are still present in the eastern industrial neighbourhood of Kissy. Some rebels retreated Monday into the hills behind Freetown, near the western neighborhoods of Aberdeen, toward Lumley, Goderich and Laka, where they are believed to have been routed by Ecomog. A ceasefire, called by rebels and supposed to have taken effect on Monday has gone unheeded.
