THE WOMEN BEHIND THE BOXING

TWO women have won a prestigious South African boxing award, without ever fighting. Shona MacTaggart and Robbyn Segal are the joint winners of the 1998 King Korn/Boxing World special award — making them the first female recipients of an award in the 23-year history of the event. Boxing World magazine editor Bert Blewett said the award was for all the work they have done behind the scene. “I think it’s a great privilege,” said Segal, wife of promoter Mike Segal. “It’s something I’ve always enjoyed, it has been a pleasure.” MacTaggart, co-ordinator for the Golden Gloves consortium, was stunned at hearing the news. “I’m taken aback… it should go to a boxer, I should imagine.”
