FOREIGN PLANES OVER ZAMBIA

ZAMBIA’S opposition United Party for National Development has asked President Frederick Chiluba to explain why foreign planes are seen in Zambezi and Solwezi at odd hours. The UPND Lusaka Province chairman Joseph Chilengi said despite United Nations sanctions against Jonas Savimbi and his rebel Unita movement, Unita officials are seen in Zambia. “The truth is that Zambia is being used as a transit point for the sale of diamonds by Unita officials,” he charged.

Meanwhile, leader of the opposition Zambia Democratic Congress party, Dean Mung’omba, who was released recently from detention over alleged involvement in a 1997 attempted coup, has said he plans to sue the government for unlawful detention, malicious prosecution and torture.
