The slaughter continues: 108/8

MICHAEL METELITS, Johannesburg | Tuesday 9.30pm.

STEVE ELWORTHY made his third catch of a bouncy delivery by Hansie Cronje, sending Keith Semple back to the pavilion, and a simple runout bagged Rawl Lewis.

Cronje took his time in touching the ball to the wicket after quick fielding by Nicky Boje and miscommunication between the batsmen had Lewis halfway down the wicket.

Cronje took two wickets in four balls. The score stands at 108 for 8 after 40 overs.

9.06pm:

RIDLEY JACOBS was caught at the boundary by Jacques Kallis off Nicky Boje, and Ganga was caught by Boucher, leaving the Windies at 92 for 6 on 31 overs.

The catch was a superb effort by Kallis at the boundary, topping Jacobs with 8 runs off 30 balls. Hansie Cronje then forced Daren Ganga to clip an edge, allowing Mark Boucher to catch him.

The Windies need 8,0 runs per over to reach their target of 222, but are plodding along at 2,7 runs per over.

8.45pm:

SHIVARNINE CHANDERPAUL fell to a bobbled catch by Steve Elworthy near the boundary mark after knocking 40 runs off 73 deliveries. Chanderpaul has been the Windies’ most consistent and productive batsman. The Windies stand at 84 for 4 after 26 overs.

The current partnership is Keith Semple and Ridley Jacobs. Jacobs has 6 runs off 16 deliveries. The dismissal of Hooper and Chanderpaul was a massive blow for the Windies hopes of reaching the target, as their tailenders have not stepped up and come through on this tour.

8.20pm:

JACQUES KALLIS made Keith Arthurton clip an edge to be snagged by Mark Boucher to bring in South Africa’s second wicket, and then did the same to Hooper, leaving the Windies 67 for 3 after 19 overs.

The current partnership is Chanderpaul and Ganga. The Windies need 155 more runs to win at a rate of 5,11. Their current rate is 3,41, however.

7.30pm:

THE West Indies are 27 for 1 after Shaun Pollock forced Junior Murray to hit at Steve Elworthy. The current partnership is Shivarnine Chanderpaul and Keith Arthurton, neither of whom are making much of an impact.

Chanderpaul has 9 runs off 26 deliveries, and Arthurton has 1 run off 12. The Windies have a current run rate of 2,91, and need one of 4,92 to win.

6.30pm:

DALE BENKENSTEIN continued to lift South Africa through the 7th and 8th wickets, joining forces with Lance Klusener for a record eigth wicket partnership of 91 runs after Mark Boucher’s dismissal. South Africa’s total is 221/8 after 50 overs, a stunning comeback from 68/6.

Benkenstein was run out on the last ball of the 50th over, after knocking 69 runs off 90 deliveries. Klusener smashed an impressive 54 runs off 36 balls, including 2 boundaries and four sixes.

The West Indies made several fielding errors in the final overs, includng Carl Hooper, usually steady in the field, missing a Benkenstein shot to turn a single into a three. This mental lapse doesn not bode well for the Windies target of 221.

5.30pm

Dale Benkenstein is standing up and doing the job of more experienced players as his partnership with Mark Boucher virtually doubled South Africa’s score to 130/7 at Boucher’s dismissal.

Beginning at 68/6, Benkenstein and Boucher combined for 62 runs before Boucher was caught by Ridley Jacobs on a ball bowled by Curtly Ambrose. The current partnership is Benkenstein with Lance Klusener with 11,2 overs left.

5.15pm

The top of South Africa’s batting order folded dramatically in Tuesday’s One Day International against the West Indies at Newlands in Cape Town, leaving the score at 125/6 after 37 overs.

This is the fifth of the seven limited overs games, currently standing at 3-1 to South Africa. If the West Indies win Tuesday’s game they can still win the series.

Mark Boucher and Dale Benkenstein are currently knocking out ones and twos and carrying the side.

At 5pm Benkenstein had 18 runs off 38 balls so far, while Boucher drew massive applause for the one boundary in his 13 runs off 27 deliveries.

Kirsten was dismissed for 6 after 13 deliveries and Gibbs was bowled by Nixon McLean after 15 runs off 33 balls. Jacques Kallis, Shaun Pollock, Hansie Cronje an Jonty Rhodes combined for 35 runs in a dismal display.
