ORGANISATION of African Unity secretary general Salim Ahmed Salim on Monday called on Ethiopia and Eritrea “to immediately put an end to the current fighting” and accept an OAU peace plan. Salim stressed his “deep concern” over new clashes in the conflict between the two Horn of Africa countries, which first broke out on May 6 1998. He also called on leaders of the belligerent countries “to exercise restraint” and “to abide by their commitments and do everything in their power to avert a further escalation of the conflict.” Fighting on Monday was spread along the 1000km border between Ethiopia and Eritrea, and Ethiopian jets flew combat sorties near Badme in the west, and Tsorona in the centre.
