POLITICAL parties in Parliament have yet to agree on an amendment to the Constitution that will allow President Nelson Mandela to set a date by proclamation for the general election. The amendment will allow the president to set a poll date before the end of the National Assembly’s sitting on April 30. Opposition parties say they will support the proposal by the ruling African National Congress, but only if the ANC agrees to drop another amendment that will see the president setting the dates of provincial elections, rather than provincial premiers. Meanwhile, the issue is being dealt with in sub-committees of the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces.
