FORMER Rwandan information minister Eliezer Niyitegeka, wanted by the United Nations’ war crimes tribunal for complicity in the 1994 genocide, has been arrested in Kenya. Niyitegeka, wanted by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda since July 1996, was information minister under the interim government led by Jean Kambanda, who himself pleaded guilty to genocide and crimes against humanity and was given a life sentence. Niyitegeka was taken directly to the central police station in Nairobi, according to a witness. He faces charges of massacring Tutsis in the mountainous Bisesero region of western Rwanda, where thousands of people sought refuge between April and July of 1994.
