OBASANJO’S PDP WINS MAJORITY

THE centre-left Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of former military ruler Olusegun Obasanjo won an overall majority in both houses of the new Nigerian parliament, according to unofficial results compiled on Monday. The PDP held 56 seats in the 109-seat senate with some states still to return results and 181 seats in the 360-seat House of Representatives, with last results still due. The south-west-based Alliance for Democracy (AD) won 18 seats in the senate and 71 in the House of Representatives, the tally showed. The right-wing All Peoples Party (APP) won 19 senate seats and 57 seats in the House of Representatives. The PDP won the local and state polls staged in December and January respectively and its latest victory is thought to augur well for Obasanjo’s chances of victory in next weekend’s presidential poll.
