ZIMBABWE’S Standard newspaper editor, Mark Chavunduka, and his chief writer, Ray Choto, will appear at the Harare Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face charges of contravening section 50 of the Law and Order Maintenance Act. The two journalists were illegally detained and tortured by state agents before being released and brought to the court on 21 January where they were each remanded on $10 000 bail until 22 February. In its case, the state is alleging that Choto failed to verify his facts with senior officials in the defence force and moreover that the story was false and likely to cause public “alarm and despondency”.
