This image, Berlin (1981) is part of a major Jurgen Schadeberg retrospective on show at the Gallery of Photography in Dublin, Ireland until the end of March.
Although Schadeberg is best known for his classic black and white Drum photographs from Fifties South Africa, the images on show will expose viewers to his broader ouvre capturing “people and their humanity” from the Kalahari in the Fifties to life in New York, Spain, Italy. His true-to-life images of England in the Sixties and Seventies, from Cambridge balls to Hackney street life, are rare documents of a time that failed to be wholly captured by David Bailey style portraiture or pop images of Carnaby Street. Schadeberg will also be running master classes and workshops at Irish universities and colleges.
In addition to the photography component of the retrospective, a selection of Schadeberg Movie Company documentaries dealing with South Africa’s social and cultural history will be screened in Dublin’s cultural precinct. Films like The Seven Ages of Music, Voices from Robben Island and Claudia and Jurgen Schadeberg’s latest documentary on pioneering black photographer Ernest Cole will be screened.
After Dublin, Schadeberg will be exhibiting in Canada, the United States and France.
