US WARY OF LOCKERBIE BREAKTHROUGH

THE United States remains wary of Libyan vows to surrender two suspects wanted for the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am jet over Lockerbie, Scotland, state department spokesperson James Foley said on Monday. Foley said that while Washington is encouraged that Libya has set a date by which the pair will be handed over, it remains unconvinced of Libya’s sincerity. On Friday, Libya announced that the two suspects would be turned over by April 6, for a Scottish trial in the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, President Nelson Mandela, speaking at his first official engagement since returning from Libya at the weekend, reiterated on Tuesday that there are no conditions attached to the handing over of the two accused. “They will be delivered on or before 6 April. Collateral matters can be discussed separately, but the delivery is unconditional,” he said.
