JUDGMENT RESERVED IN DP BARCODE CASE

The Constitutional Court reserved judgment on Monday on the Democratic Party’s challenge to the government’s ruling that only voters with barcoded identity books are eligible to vote in the June election. Peter Horwitz, attorney for the DP, said the party closed its argument on Monday at the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg. There was no indication when judgment might be expected. The New National Party lodged a similar application to challenge the same provision in the Electoral Act — in that case, the Constitutional Court also reserved judgment. Horwitz said the court might rule on both parties’ applications at the same time.
