Stormers prevail at Newlands

DAVID SHAPSHAK, Johannesburg | Saturday 5.00pm.

THE Stormers, fresh from a triumphant tour of Australasia, continued their streak with a win 35-14 over the Queensland Reds at Newlands on Saturday.

The Stormers, playing with confidence in their first home game in Cape Town, led 13-3 at half-time.

Their forwards dominated in set pieces and their backline produced imaginative and fast-paced rugby to out score their opponents four tries to one from a surfeit of territorial advantage and possession.

Braam van Straaten, continuing his run of form, was instrumental in his side’s win, kicking three conversions and three penalties and keeping his backline firing.

The back three turned in superb performances, with Pieter Rossouw standing out. He goaled a chip ahead by Bobby Skinstad, racing away from the defence and diving on the ball a metre from the dead ball line. Earlier the Springbok left wing was unlucky to have dropped an intercept ball with the try line clear.

Number eight and captain Skinstad, who was named man-of-the-match surely for providing the pivot, scored the fourth try dead on full-time, to add the bonus point.

The outclassed Reds’ only try came form a good piece of running by Damian Smith, and three penalties by Nathan Spooner.

Scorers: Stormers — Tries: Dan van Zyl, Pieter Rossouw, Percy Montogmery, Bobby Skinstad; Conversions: Braam van Straaten (3); Penalties: Van Straaten (3).

Wellington — Tries: Damian Smith; Penalties: Nathan Spooner (3).
